Delphi-Meteora Two-Day Tour
We take a leisurely drive from Athens towards the northern part of Greece passing cotton fields and beautiful mountains to the town of Arahova, renowned for its architecture and cobbled uphill streets. After a short stop in Arahova, we continue to Delphi, the center of the world! Delphi, in antiquity was one of the richest and most popular sanctuaries dedicated to the god Apollo who predicted the future. We visit the ancient ruins of the site, as well as the archaeological museum, home of one of the finest examples of ancient bronze statues, the famous Charioteer.
We have lunch then head north to the Thessaly area in central Greece, where the Meteora monasteries are dramatically perched up on high pinnacles that offer a unique landscape that looks like another planet. We arrive in the nearby town of Kalambaka and overnight.
Next day, a visit to a couple of monasteries will be an unforgettable experience. After that we will have lunch at a famous local tavern with delicious local food. On the way back to Athens, we stop at the Thermopylae battlefield to see the area where 300 Spartans stood against a huge Persian army, defending Greece to the death in 380 BC.
Classical Greece Four-Day Tour
DAY 1: Athens-Corinth-Mycenae-Epidaurus:
This is a trip to the most important ancient sites on the Peloponnese. We drive first and stop at the Corinth Canal. Then we head to nearby ancient Corinth, excavated by the American School of Classical Studies. We explore the ancient site with its Forum, shops, and the famous “ Bema “ where the Apostle Paul was tried. Next we drive further south to the prehistoric site of Mycenae, the kingdom of Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks in Troy, where the 19th century excavations revealed the glory and wealth of this very ancient kingdom. Before we visit ancient Epidaurus where an amazing ancient theater exists almost intact, we pass the charming town of Nafplion by the sea.
DAY 2: Nafplion-ancient Olympia
We overnight in the charming town of Nafplion by the sea, which became in the 19th century the first capital of modern Greece. The next day we do a spectacular drive through the Arcadian mountains, which will take us to ancient Olympia where athletes in antiquity competed in honour of Zeus. Learn about the history of the original Olympic games, as we walk among the impressive remains of the Gymnasium, and the temples of Hera and Zeus. You will also have the opportunity to run inside the famous ancient stadium. As well we will visit the Olympic museum, housing one of the masterpieces of Greek sculpture, the statue of Hermes by Praxiteles. Overnight in the small town of Olympia.
DAY 3: Olympia-Delphi
We drive from Olympia to Delphi, across the new cable bridge, connecting the Peloponnese to the mainland. Upon arrival in Delphi, we visit the ancient oracle and the museum (please read the description of Delphi highlights in the Delphi-Meteora tour above). Overnight in Delphi.
DAY 4: Delphi-Osios Loukas monastery-Athens
Today, you will have the opportunity to visit up on a mountain the 11th century AD Monastery of St. Loukas, with the famous church decorated with beautiful mosaics. Later in the afternoon, arrival in Athens, and tour ends.
(This 4 day Classical Greece tour may be extended to one more day, by including Meteora, right after Delphi. Please read the Meteora description from the above 2 day tour Delphi-Meteora.) In such a case, overnight in Kalambaka town, and on the 5th day return to Athens.)
In the Footsteps of St. Paul Religious Tour
This tour can take up to 6 days from Athens to Thessaloniki and return to Athens. We follow in the steps of the Apostle St Paul’s second missionary journey in Greece. Visit the Acropolis of Athens and the Mars Hill where Paul delivered his speech to the Athenians.
In Athens we can also visit the Museum of Byzantine Culture known for its outstanding collection of Icons. Explore the biblical town of Corinth near Athens, and see the “Bema” where Paul was brought before the tribunal. We also visit Philippi, in northern Greece, where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe and baptized Lydia, the first Christian in Europe, and we travel together to Thessalonica and Beria where the great Apostle lived and preached.
All starting and finishing in Athens, the above tours are the most popular land tours preferred by most guests. In addition, Vicky is happy to create explorations of other areas of Greece, such as the Islands (by cruise ships or by ferry), wonderful itineraries on the island of Crete, or of Northern Greece (Thessalonica, ancient Pella (birth town of Alexander the Great) and Vergina where his father, King Philip was buried. Vicky can also organize additional Christian religious tours visiting more places where Paul preached in Greece during his 2nd journey, such as Philippi, Thessalonica, Beroia, Athens and Corinth.
